Find out what to expect from the new chapter in French Noir
Created by Hervé Hadmar and Marc Herpoux, crime drama Witnesses has been renewed for a second season by France 2 due to an overwhelming 5.1 million French viewers. The new eight-part series is due to begin filming on 28th March in Mont Saint-Michel and around the region of Lille. Fans will be happy to see Marie Dompnier reprising her role as detective Sandra Winckler, as well as actress Audrey Fleurot from Spiral (2005-2014) joining the cast.
With actor Thierry Lhermitte’s departure from the series, the second season narrative will focus on Dompnier as our heroine protagonist. Audiences will instantly recognise the show’s newest cast member Audrey Fleurot. Fleurot is best known for playing the ambitious and cut-throat lawyer Joséphine Karlsson in the long-running French crime series Spiral. The actress’s credits include featuring in Un village français (2009- ) and the film Untouchable (2011), opposite François Cluzet and Omar Sy. Fleurot’s character, Catherine Keemer, will be at the centre of the investigation as a woman suffering from amnesia, who is found alongside fifteen frozen men in a bus by the coast. Is Keemer a victim or does her relationship with the dead make her the prime suspect?
Witnesses combined the slow-burning drama of Wallander (2005-2013) and Broadchurch (2013- ) with the moody atmosphere of The Bridge (2011- ) for six nail-biting episodes. The scenery of Le Tréport near Normandy drew UK viewers in with its sweeping landscape and entrancing cinematography. In addition to the tense narrative, the ethereal opening credit sequence with the wolf heightened our fascination with the show’s sleek and sombre style even more!
