The Norwegian period drama stars Stellan Skarsgård in a brutal coming-of-age drama based on real events
King of Devil’s Island (2010) is a dramatisation of the events that took place at the Bastøy Reform School in May 1915. The story centres round new inmate Erling, otherwise known as “C19″ (Benjamin Helstad, The Saboteurs, 2015). We follow his experience as he struggles to fit into his new hostile environment. Not only must he deal with the harsh winter; he is subjected to the cruelty of Housefather Bråthe, played by Kristoffer Joner (The Monitor, 2011 and Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead, 2014). His burgeoning friendship with as Olav “C1″ (Trond Nilssen) helps him to fight back against the corrupt system and attempt to escape his solitary life.
The award-winning film has garnered recognition at the Norwegian Amanda Awards in 2011 by taking home prizes for Best Film, Best Supporting Actor for Trond Nilssen and Best Score from Johan Söderqvist.
King of Devil’s Island airs on BBC Four on Saturday at 9pm
