Stellan Skarsgård stars in Abi Morgan’s brand new crime drama as “a man caught between the living and the dead”
The highly regarded Swedish actor may have let the unusual Norwegian setting overwhelm him in the classic thriller Insomnia (1997), however we are about to witness Skarsgård (In Order of Disappearance, 2014 and Nymphomaniac Volume 1&2, 2013) take on a new crime-solving challenge in the UK.
Stellan Skarsgård plays an idiosyncratic, traumatised cop, John River, who discovers a newfound power; the ability to manifest visions of the dead. However, not only can he see his former partner “Stevie”, recently killed in the line of duty; he is plagued by visions of both killers and victims from the past who return to haunt his present. River co-stars Nicola Walker (Spooks, 2003-2011, Babylon, 2014), Eddie Marsan (Still Life, 2013 and Ray Donovan 2013-2015), Lesley Manville (Maleficent and Mr. Turner, 2014) and Adeel Akhtar (Utopia, 2013-2014).
The new BBC series is written by Abi Morgan who has established her award-winning vocation, having penned cinematic scripts for Shame and The Iron Lady in 2011, as well as the upcoming historical drama Suffragette (2015). Morgan’s recent televisual projects include the Cold War spy thriller The Hour (2011-2012), also for the BBC. The series is directed by Richard Laxton whose credits include Effie Gray (2014) and episodes of international Nordic sci-fi series Fortitude (2015- ).
Join River on his struggle to make sense of the real and imaginary in the new six-episode drama.
River premieres on 13th October at 9pm on BBC One.
