The major six-part series, from the producers of Broadchurch (2013- ), The Hour (2011-2012) and Spooks (2002-2011) and written by the award-winning, BAFTA nominated writer Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady and Shame, 2011), is released on DVD and Blu-ray today!
Adding a touch of Scandinavian crime to the British psychological drama, a new breed of international intrigue captivated viewers on BBC One as detective John River (Stellan Skarsgård) lured us on his fragile journey. Not only were we absorbed by the harrowing investigation into the death of his former partner “Stevie” (Nicola Walker), we gained an insight into the mind of a tragic hero.
Set after a matter of weeks of Stevie’s murder, John River is motivated by discovering the identity of her killer. While he gets closer to finding out what happened from piecing together the clues, he is tasked with solving other cases that bring him closer to the victims. Despite River’s levels of intuition and astute observations, which enable him to truly understand the essence of the crimes he is presented with, his competence is questioned by superiors, including his boss Chrissie Read (Lesley Manville). However, with the philosophical bond he has created with his work, River’s grasp on reality detrimentally fluctuates. Stevie may be dead but her presence is still strong and, as River seeks closure from his overwhelming grief, he attempts to face his struggles in a chance to recover his life.
The success of the series is reflected in the reception from the critics:
“RIVER does what so many fail to do, by pulsing with a humour that induces all-out love from the start. A stunning bit of work from Abi Morgan. The cop show jolts back to life.” – Guardian Guide
“Everything about this series – the way it’s shot, scored, written and performed – moves the story on with energy and intelligence, giving it depth and range.” – ⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆ – Daily Mail
“Skarsgård gives RIVER a complexity that takes the production to another level” – The Times
“Even amid the plethora of idiosyncratic hard-bitten detectives who populate TV’s many thriller series, John River (Stellan Skarsgård) stands out from the norm.” – ⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆ – Mail on Sunday
Re-live the haunting opening sequence of the first ground-breaking episode, the emotionally sincere scenes between River and his ‘visions’, as well as the heart-breaking psychological descent and vulnerability on display in River’s therapy sessions. Not forgetting the tender, awkward humour with River and his new partner Ira King (Adeel Akhtar) and the pop music soundtrack that will breathe new life into disco karaoke playlists.
