Pre-order the latest Euro Noir from Belgium on DVD
As seen on Sky Atlantic, the brand-new crime thrilling series Public Enemy is available to buy through Nordic Noir & Beyond in time for a smouldering summer. Nordic and Euro Noir fans alike can pre-order their copy from the Amazon store now, ahead of its DVD release on Monday 17th July.
The writer and director, Matthieu Frances is said to have been inspired by such critically acclaimed series as True Detective and Breaking Bad. However, the premise for Public Enemy is also heavily influenced by true Belgian crime. Much like the adaptation of Mo Hayder’s The Treatment, Public Enemy is loosely based on the controversial Dutroux affair, which took place between 1995 and 1996. This shocking spate of child killings also led to a widespread scrutiny of the law due to how the investigation was handled in the media.
Since the show aired on Sky Atlantic in May, iNews has hailed Public Enemy as “a breakout TV success for Belgium”, “Intriguing” by the iNewspaper and “Absorbing and atmospheric” from the Radio Times. The series has also wowed audiences at Cannes’ premiere MipDrama screenings, alongside the latest Spanish crime drama I Know Who You Are. Adding to its burgeoning glory, Public Enemy took home the prestigious Coup de Coeur Award.
What is Public Enemy about? After serving 20 years in prison for killing children, Guy Béranger (Angelo Bison) is out on parole. Due to his heinous crime and still being regarded as a danger to society, Béranger is placed in the remote monastery of Vielsart Abbey. Inspector Chloé Muller (Stéphanie Blanchoud), is reassigned from her duties in Brussels to guard and protect the despised Béranger from the threat of villagers nearby.
However, recurring nightmares fuelled by childhood trauma forces Muller to face her own fears after a local girl goes missing. It’s not long before the idyllic community is sparked with outrage against Béranger’s suspicious behaviour, uniting a vengeful mob and a religious sect, sworn to defend the sacred oath. Together with a young monk named Lucas (Clément Manuel), Muller stumbles upon dark secrets hidden in the village and within the monastery walls.
Public Enemy is released on DVD through Nordic Noir & Beyond on Monday 17th July.
