Get acquainted with Martin Beck’s new partner…
After nearly twenty years, one of the greatest police procedural partnerships is coming to an end. Commissioner Martin Beck (Peter Haber) and gruff, temperamental Gunvald Larsson (Mikael Persbrandt) will be disbanded after investigating 30 cases together on screen. But fear not, Beck will continue to fight crime with a new compatriot – Oslo Detective Steinar Hovland, played by Kristofer Hivju.
Beck and Larsson’s final outing, in the first film of the latest series entitled Gunvald, premiered on Swedish television on New Year’s Day. It has been known that Mikael Persbrandt would be leaving the long-running series to pursue an international career in cinema. However, the unique relationship and touching friendship that has blossomed since 1997 between middle-aged Martin Beck and tough, no-nonsense Gunvald Larsson has been endearing to watch.
Following the bittersweet departure of Larsson, the second film, Steinar, will air to Swedish audiences on 6th February 2016 to introduce Beck’s new partner. The new dynamic duo will establish their professional compatibility in the next two films vägs ände and Sista chancen, set to air in March and April 2016.
Internationally, the actor has joined the global cast of Games of Thrones (2013-2016) as the mighty Tormund Giantsbane, which has also featured Birgitte Hjort Sørensen and Pilou Asbæk from Danish political drama Borgen (2010-2013). Hivju has appeared in the Hollywood prequel to John Carpenter’s classic The Thing (2011), alongside Scandinavian stars Ulrich Thomsen, Trond Espen Seim, Stig Henrik Hoff and Carsten Bjørnlund. Hivju’s credits include In Order of Disappearance (2014) and the 2016 BAFTA-nominated comedy Force Majeure (2014).
The four new Beck films are written by Mikael Syrén, Josefin Johansson, Stefan Thunberg and Antonia Pyk. The series is produced by Filmlance International in collaboration with TV4 and C More.
Beck will return to BBC Four soon. Check back here for the new series UK air date.
