It has been reported that Pilou Asbæk may be joining the cast of renowned fantasy series Game of Thrones. Although HBO have yet to confirm the news, reports show the actor filming scenes on location in Ballintoy Harbour, Northern Ireland.
Absæk is rumoured to be playing the role of Euron Greyjoy aka ‘Crow’s Eye’, the one-eyed uncle of Theon (Alfie Allen) and Yara Gregjoy (Gemma Whelan). The character features in George R. R. Martin’s novel A Feast For Crows as a cunning and “infamous pirate who has terrorized seas all around the world.” The Danish actor could be following in the footsteps of his Borgen co-star Birgitte Hojort Sørensen who made an appearance on the previous series of Game of Thrones as wilding leader Karsi who was determined to fight in the Battle of Castle Black after the death of her family during the Night’s Watch.
Many audiences recognise Absæk from the Danish political series Borgen in which he portrayed spin-doctor, Kasper Juul for three seasons. The actor has also created a name for himself in cinema as well as television starring in the tense thriller A Hijacking (2012) and Luc Besson’s science-fiction action film Lucy (2014). However, Absæk returned to television later this year starring in the epic Danish drama series 1864 – alongside Søren Malling, Jakob Oftebro and his Borgen co-star Sidse Babett Knudsen – which recounted the devastating events of the Second Schleswig War.
As well as Game of Thrones, Absæk is proving to be rather busy as he is also currently filming Ben-Hur: a remake of William Wyler’s 1959 epic classic. Absæk will be starring alongside Jack Huston and Oscar winning actor Morgan Freeman as the role of Roman server Pontius Pilate.
Game of Thrones is set to return to television screens in Spring 2016.
