Return to the crime scenery of the Welsh landscape…

The Welsh crime drama Hinterland (or ‘Y Gwyll’) situated in Aberystwyth, Wales, brought DCI Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington) to our attention. His embodiment of the intriguing, hard-boiled detective’s personality suited our attraction to the moodiness of the exquisite crime drama. Such shows as Broadchurch (2013- ), River (2015- ) and more recently Marcella (2016- ) have visualised a similar style to the acclaimed Nordic Noir shows. The rural setting of Ceredigion in Hinterland can also be compared to Wallander (2005-2013) for the striking backdrop of Skåne County in Sweden and the atmospheric beauty of Witnesses in Normandy. In season one, it seemed that there would be a relationship blossoming between the jaded detective and his partner DI Mared Rhys (Mali Harries). However, true to the form of many antiheroes tasked to investigate crime, Mathias’ own demons get in the way, not to mention the villainous characters lurking across the plains.

Since its first season, the show has received an impressive amount of accolades. At the 2014 BAFTA Cymru Awards, Hinterland won ‘Best Director: Fiction’ for Marc Evans, ‘Best Cinematography – Drama’ for Richard Stoddard and ‘Best Screenwriter’ went to Jeff Murphy. Richard Harrington has also been nominated for a Golden Nymph as an ‘Outstanding Actor in a Television Film’ at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival in 2014. In 2015, Harrington won the BAFTA Cymru Best Actor Award, with nominations for Mali Harries as Best Actress and Best Television Drama.

Hinterland

This weekend marks the return of Mathias as Chief Superintendent Bran Prosser (Aneirin Hughes) convinces him to take on a suspicious case of arson, which has left a mother and child hospitalised and in critical condition. Can Mathias re-join the Dyfed-Powys Police and keep his personal and professional lives separate? Or will he end up wavering precariously on the edge of sanity?

Get ready to put on your warm parka and start watching as the tense, five-part crime drama unfolds this Saturday!

Hinterland season two begins with the 2015 Winter Special from on Saturday 21st April at 9pm on BBC Four!
