If you’ve been enjoying the recent crime noir series from around Europe, then why not check out the new Welsh drama beginning on April 28 on BBC Four.
Hinterland is a brand new bilingual crime drama set in Aberystwyth. It stars Richard Harrington as DCI Tom Mathias, a London Met police officer who moves to Wales to start a new life. Almost immediately though he is called to investigate a brutal attack on a 64-year-old woman whose body is found near the remote village of Devil’s Bridge. As Mathias delves deeper into case he discovers the truth about the victim’s tortured past; a history that may reveal the murderer’s identity.
Very much in the Nordic Noir mould, the BBC Wales/BBC Four/S4C co-production was previously shown on BBC Wales in January to critical acclaim, achieving substantial viewing figures. It becomes the latest noir series to be shown on BBC Four, following in the footsteps of The Bridge and Inspector De Luca. It is also worth noting that Hinterland was brought by Danish channel DR to show alongside their own series, which include Nordic favourites like The Killing and Borgen. The four part mini-series begins this Monday at 9pm.
