There’s more quality European drama to look out for later this month, as the BBC has announced that the much-anticipated World War II mini-series Generation War will start on Saturday 26 April on BBC 2. The 3-part, German-made series begins in Berlin, 1941 where five friends bid each other farewell on the eve war, promising to meet up again at Christmas.
But the war changes everything. Charlotte is a young Jewish nurse in the Wehrmacht who is deeply in love with Wilhelm, a highly decorated officer who is ordered to the Eastern Front with his daydreaming younger brother Friedhelm. Viktor and Greta are lovers whose lives take dramatically different paths: Greta is a talented singer who dreams of stardom; whilst Viktor is a Jew facing capture and deportation. Over the course of the series their courage, loyalties, ideologies – and friendship – are put to the ultimate test as they learn the true cost of war.
The series begins on Saturday April 26 on BBC 2 and will be available on DVD and Blu-ray from May 12. For more information on Generation War please visit the official facebook page.
