Take your seat as the reign of Birgitte Nyborg is presented in an epic ten hour-long play

The original series of Borgen (2010-2013) became an international success with an all-star Danish cast including Sidse Babett Knudsen, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Mikael Birkkjær, Pilou Asbæk and Søren Malling. The political drama has garnered multiple awards including Outstanding Actress in a drama series for Sidse Babett Knudsen at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival in 2011, a BAFTA for Best International Series in 2012, as well as Best Danish TV Series in 2014 at the Robert Festival.

The complete series is available to watch on iTunes

Now, the series has been given an alternative lease of life in a highly ambitious theatrical experience. In the south of the Netherlands, the Northern Dutch Theatre (NNT) is staging a re-imagined version of Borgen within a ten hour-long adaptation by Ola Mafaalani.

The format of the play mimics episodes of a series by being acted out in 30 minute intervals over the course of the ten hour time-frame, beginning at 1pm and coming to a dramatic end at 11pm. The play will focus on fourteen episodes in an amalgamation of two seasons. This immersive event features a cast of thirty actors including Malou Gorter and Anna Drijver.

The Danish series writer and creator Adam Price extends his professional culinary training by providing the audience with a delectable menu served throughout the day. During Price’s hand-crafted dinner extravaganza, recorded segments of the theatre performance will be screened to patrons as they feast.

While Punchdrunk and the National Theatre have endeavoured to redefine immersive productions, such as promenade performances of Faust and The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable, we shall wait for news of Borgen on stage reaching the UK.

Borgen opens to audiences at the Vrijthof Theatre in the Dutch city of Maastricht for a limited time only from 28th – 29th May 2016, with tickets priced at €77.50
